"I fully recommend the dental practice. Pleasant and professional team. The implant is well-made and fitted. Perfectly matched with shape and colour. Thank you."

Dental implants are an ideal solution if you have missing teeth or are looking for an alternative to wearing dentures. They offer a smile that looks and feels completely natural.

A dental implant is a replacement for a natural root and it’s the most secure and long-lasting known anchor for false teeth.

Surgically placed below the gum line, titanium implants fuse with the jawbone so that crowns, bridges or dentures can then be attached by screws or clips.

Implants are the most sustainable alternative to conventional bridges and partial dentures because they don’t require priming of adjacent teeth and they anchor the denture in place, allowing no movement whatsoever.

When teeth are lost, the jaw bone underneath starts to shrink, but implants reverse this process by fusing with the bone, encouraging it to grow naturally to support the implant. This can transform the shape of the face and halt the drastic appearance of ageing brought on by the loss of bone volume in the jaw.

"I first started using Dr Rafal Topolski in 2013, when I was in disperse having lost 3 teeth in quick succession, and trying to live with a plate. I found a very caring staff and a very knowledgeable, helpful, and understanding dentist offering excellent value for money,. He explains everything including options, and there was never any pressure. 9 years later with all my implants very much in place I went back to have another tooth replaced, and had the same excellent service.

I would recommend Dr Topolski to anyone wanting implant treatment."

"Following a sailing accident in 2017, I was referred to Smile Care for implant surgery. As an already nervous dental patient, it was with some trepidation that I turned up for my first consultation.

Right from the start, Rafal could not have been more reassuring. He took the time to explain the full range of options available to me, produced a personalised and fully costed care plan and, most importantly, carried out all the work and subsequent aftercare in person.

I can’t speak highly enough of the professional care that I have received and continue to receive from Smile Care. From the cheerful dental nurses (Kate & Tina), through to the comfortably furnished waiting room and on into the spotlessly clean and very high tec treatment room.

Whilst I can’t honestly admit to looking forward my visits, I can say that the team at Smile Care have made me as comfortable as I believe I am ever going to be when visiting the dentist…………"

You may have some swelling and discomfort around the implant area. If so, you can take an over-the-counter painkiller such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine and if you have any questions, ask your pharmacist for advice.

Possible complications of any operation include an unexpected reaction to the anaesthetic, or excessive bleeding.

In the event that the nerves are damaged by the implant, you may feel temporary or sometimes permanent tingling or numbness. It may also be painful. X-rays help us see the position of the nerves in your jawbone to minimise this risk.

Occasionally, the jawbone doesn’t fuse with the implant properly and the implant can become loose. This isn’t usually painful, but the implant won’t be able to support false teeth. You may need to have another implant fitted. During your regular check-ups we will make sure your implants are still secure and not causing any problems.

If you feel that you need pain relief, you can take over the counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine and if you have any questions, ask the pharmacist.

You will need to frequent appointments with us for a few months after having dental implants in Plymouth. This is so that we can check that all is fine.

Once you have recovered, your implants and replacement teeth should function just like natural teeth and you will be able to eat as normal. It’s very important to make sure that you brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day to ensure they stay healthy. We recommend that you see Jan our hygienist regularly.

If you damage one of the teeth attached to an implant, do not worry we can probably remove it and put in a replacement. If the implant itself is damaged, it may be possible to repair it.

Good dental hygiene will keep your teeth and gums healthy and key to making sure that your treatment is successful and your implants last as long as possible.

Clean and floss your teeth and gums thoroughly every day. It’s also very important that if you haven’t already stopped smoking, you try to quit.

Clean around each implant by brushing and flossing in the same way that you would usually clean your natural teeth. You may need special floss or interdental toothbrushes to clean around your implant and teeth.

Dental implants can last a lifetime if cared for properly. Clean them every day to stop calculus and plaque developing. Which can lead to gum infection, bleeding, soreness and general discomfort, just as would happen with natural teeth.

We recommend you visit us regularly and make hygiene appointments to maintain your implants and teeth. We will ask to see you more frequently for the first few months after you have implants to check that there aren’t any problems. If all is clear, your dental care will be the same as for natural teeth.

It ultimately depends on the number and location of the implants, but simple, uncomplicated dental implant placement usually takes one visit.

The entire process can take about two to nine months, depending on your treatment plan. There are two main phases: First the implants have to heal by fusing to the bone, and then the tooth replacement restorations have to be fabricated and attached. We will ensure that the size, shape, colour and fit of your teeth will completely blend with and match your individual facial characteristics and remaining natural teeth.

In general, implants, which are a kind of screw in the jawbone on which the “new” tooth sits. Are placed when a tooth is missing (due to illness or trauma) or when one has to be removed natural (due to a significant destruction of the tooth due to tooth decay) and must be replaced by an artificial one.

But not everyone can wear them. So, if you are missing any teeth or suffer from any oral pathology that puts your dentures at risk, put yourself in the hands of a trusted dentist to advise you properly.

This specialist should assess the condition of your gum beforehand because there is a need for enough bone mass for the implant to be fixed. If this is not the case, it will be necessary to perform more intermediate steps before inserting these pieces or to evaluate other options.

Usually, the first thing that the specialist does is to perform an imaging test, which allows obtaining a good vision of the bone to verify that it is possible to implant in it the new piece correctly. The gum is also scanned to see if it is healthy (if it is sick, a treatment to cure it). On the other hand, it is necessary to assess the occlusion of the mouth, that is, how it bites, to ensure that the implant area will not receive more pressure than is adequate.

If there is a gum infection, the problem must be solved beforehand (antibiotics are sometimes prescribed, a dental cleaning is done.). If the problem is that there is not enough bone, sometimes it can be regenerated using bone from the same patient or bovine. But if the gum does not heal or enough bone mass cannot be generated, the implant must be discarded.

Then the classic “bridge” is performed. In this case, a dental prosthesis is placed that is supported by the pieces on the sides, but it is necessary to file them so that the bridge can hold well so that these teeth become weak. Therefore, for some time now and whenever possible, it is customary to recommend the implant before.

Keep in mind that not everyone has the same quality. It is convenient to ask for several budgets and be well informed: some offers do not include all the implant placement processes, such as the crown fixation or prosthesis that goes over the implant. When choosing a professional, this should be a dentist or a maxillofacial surgeon.

No, implants are not visible. Also, the artificial teeth that are placed on them are designed to look natural and characteristic of the person wearing them.

Not necessarily. The implant may move if it has not integrated well into the bone and gum. In this case, it must be removed, and the specialist will assess whether another can be put on.

Inflammation of the gum around the implant (mucositis) can evolve into peri-implantitis, that is, an infection of the bone that holds it. That reduces its stability.

The sensation is not the same as in the rest of the teeth since both the implant and the tooth that is placed on top of it are artificial pieces. However, neither the implant nor the new tooth has to hurt or bother.

Our dental implants in Plymouth are sourced from a variety of implant suppliers, which enables us to provide the best product for your needs.
What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is inserted into the patient’s jaw bone. The main difference from the bridge over teeth bridge is that this second option also replaces the root of the piece. This prevents the loss of the tooth from ending up affecting the bone. Again, a standard dental implant which may be zirconia or porcelain – metal to give the implant the full functionality and aesthetics.
